Powell’s has this awesome book subscription program called Indiespensable. I lusted after it for months but somehow convinced myself that I couldn’t quite justify paying for it. I love Powell’s, I miss living in Portland, and every month I’d check back on the website and realize the book being mailed out was something I’d either read and loved or was dying to get my hands on.

One time, only ONE time, months and months ago, I asked my boyfriend if he thought I should go ahead and sign up. He said it seemed a little expensive but it was up to me. It never came up in conversation with him again, but I kept thinking about it.

Then the holidays rolled around and my parents kept asking me what I wanted and I couldn’t think of anything except an Indiespensable subscription. But I didn’t say anything about it. I guess I figured one day I’d grow up and pay for it myself.

Then on Christmas Eve my boyfriend surprised me with it! The first shipment came recently and I’m totally in love. A signed copy of Hannah Pittard’s novel, an advance copy of another novel, a sweet Powell’s mug…

I’m still kicking myself a little bit for missing out on The Lonely Polygamist and The Instructions, but it was so cute that my boyfriend remembered that I wanted this.
